HSA and FSA Eligibility of WHOOP:

WHOOP is eligible for purchase with a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). In most cases, you need to pay for it out-of-pocket and apply for reimbursement. (See below for more details).

What is the WHOOP 4.0 Fitness Tracker?

You don’t need to be a professional athlete to want to perform at your best.

But until recently, tracking the biometric data that would allow you to do so required a professional-grade team of experts.

That’s what led Will Ahmed to found WHOOP. A college athlete prone to overtraining and de-prioritizing recovery, Ahmed wanted to know exactly how training was impacting his body and what he needed to do to perform better. Even more, he wanted everyone to have access to this insight.

After reading 500 medical papers to identify the key metrics shown to have the most impact on your health and years of R&D, WHOOP released the most advanced wearable on the market to help users reach peak performance.

Healthy Insights: Why Should You Track Your Health?

At their core, fitness trackers help you to better understand your body.

They do this by tracking and presenting information that would otherwise be difficult to gather on your own. At the most basic level, you can start to get an idea of how much exercise or sleep you get each day — and more importantly, you can compare that to how you’re feeling to get a sense of how your body reacts to different factors.

As wearables have advanced, they’ve moved from the realm of simply tracking to providing powerful insights about things like the quality of your sleep, how stressful your workout was, how recovered you are, and even suggesting meals for certain health outcomes.

Beyond that, fitness trackers have been shown to increase motivation, encourage adherence to diets or exercise plans, and facilitate healthy habits

How Does the WHOOP 4.0 Fitness Tracker Work?

WHOOP focuses on understanding the dynamic relationship between your physical exertion, mental load, sleep quality, general health, and your body’s ability to bounce back.

It starts by measuring the metrics that matter for your physical and mental health — like 99% heart rate and HRV accuracy, sleep tracking, overnight blood oxygen levels, and other health data. Because your body’s state is changing every day, WHOOP is constantly evaluating, calibrating, and making personalized recommendations just for you.

In that sense, WHOOP is less of a fitness tracker and more of a human performance coach because it offers guidance for what to do based on your present state (such as how to improve your sleep or whether you should push it or back off in your next workout).

WHOOP does that all in a minimalist, screen-free package, that is chargeable without having to take it off — making it the smartest and the most wearable wearable out there.

Can you purchase WHOOP with your HSA or FSA?

Yes, the following WHOOP products are HSA and FSA eligible:

  • 12-month WHOOP membership (which includes the wearable)

  • 24-month WHOOP membership (which includes the wearable)

  • Month-to-month WHOOP membership (12-month commitment)

  • WHOOP 4.0 battery pack

How to purchase a WHOOP 4.0 Fitness Tracker with your HSA/FSA

Quick Overview of HSAs & FSAs

As a quick refresher, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are tax-advantaged financial accounts set up exclusively for health-related expenses. You can think of them a bit like supplemental coverage to help pay for healthcare expenses not covered by your health insurance — and they are great tools for managing healthcare costs.

HSAs and FSAs are designed to be used for qualified medical expenses which the IRS stipulates “must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental disability or illness” and includes costs associated with diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention. In Publication 502 (the link above) you will find a comprehensive list of approved items.

Why You Should Take Advantage of HSAs or FSAs For a WHOOP 4.0 Fitness Tracker

There are a few reasons you want to consider using your HSA or FSA to buy a WHOOP 4.0 Fitness Tracker:

  1. Tax savings: Because HSAs and FSAs are tax-advantaged financial accounts, you can put money away for medical fees while also reducing your taxable income. Specficially, contributions are pre-tax and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free, which means you can save 30-40% on purchases because of tax savings.

  2. FSAs are Use It or Lose It: One major difference between FSAs and HSAs is that most FSA funds that are not used by the end of the plan year are forfeited. There is the potential for a grace period or a limited rollover option, but in the end, you will either need to use your funds or lose them.

  3. Be proactive about your health: Think of your HSA or FSA as letting you take control of your health because you can choose to invest in preventative or mitigating products or services not typically covered by your health insurance. This approach can help to detect problems early, reduce the risk of disease, and generally maintain a healthier lifestyle.

How do returns, exchanges, or canceling an order work with HSA or FSA?

You can cancel your membership or membership trial and return your WHOOP for any reason within 30 days of receipt. However, if you want to cancel your membership after that window, you can only do so at the end of the commitment or upfront period you signed up for.
